I photographed this eagle right in front of our lake shore deck on Woodbury Pond in Litchfield, Maine capturing a small fish in its talons after several attempts to fish with our resident crow’s dive bombing this poor eagle from above. I was surprised the eagle did not just turn on the crows and capture them to eat as the eagle is so much larger than the crows. But alas it never did, the eagle would just return to roost in the large pine tree across the pond to wait for several minutes and would try circling again searching for fish that would come close to the surface.
The bald eagle is the only eagle unique to North America. Its distinctive brown body and white head and tail make it easy to identify even from a distance. Bald eagles weigh between 7 and 12 pounds. Females are 30% heavier than males and have a stockier appearance. Eagles primarily eat fish, carrion, smaller birds and rodents. Eagles are also known to prey on large birds and large fish.
Bald eagles make a high-pitched squeaking sound. Other interesting behaviors include “talon clasping” or “cartwheel display”, where two eagles clasp each other’s talons in midair and spin down, letting go only when they’ve almost reached the ground. This behavior is noted to be used in courtship rituals as well as a territorial battle.
