These loons were photographed on Sand Pond while I was kayaking the chain of ponds known as Tacoma Lakes in Litchfield, Maine several years ago. I quietly observed them swimming in a circle softly hooting back and forth as if to say lets fish here. They all of a sudden dived underwater together not to be seen again for several minutes when I noticed them resurfacing again across the pond and starting the same ritual all over again. After uploading this photograph I decided to use my artistic license and converted the original color image to a black and white film image for the public to enjoy.
Fun Facts: Common loons are larger than the other loon species. Adults are 28 to 35 inches (70 to 90 centimeters) long with a wingspan of 60 inches (152 cm). Their weight ranges from 3.5 to 17.6 lbs. (1.6 to 8 kilograms). Common loons breed in forested lakes and large ponds found in Greenland, Iceland and northern North America. In the winter, they live along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America, Iceland and Europe.
