Loons spend time each day rubbing and preening their feathers with their beaks using an oil gland located beneath their tail feathers. This way they keep their feathers waterproofed & healthy. This image is # 3 of a 3 part series of a preening common loon photographed on Sand Pond while kayaking Tacoma Lakes in Litchfield, Maine late in September. It shows the viewer the stages captured while a loon preens and grooms its feathers. It always ends with the loon standing up in the water and finishing with a good shake to place all the healthy feathers back in place while removing the feathers that are old. Late fall is the time when all mature loons start to molt. They will loose the beautiful black and white breeding plumage your see here and end up with a drab grey white and brown plumage for the winter months. I was happy to see the sunlight breaking through the trees to highlight this amazing display against the deep green water under the overhang of the tall pine and fir trees along the shoreline of Sand Pond.
