Description
"Portrait Of A White Bengal Tiger" is an original fine art wildlife photograph by Sandra Huston.
I photographed this White Bengal tiger named Taj resting on a hot sultry day late in September at the Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, Massachusetts . It was quite the treat to be able to observe such a magnificent animal up close and personal, especially in a display so close to what they would enjoy in the wild. The Bengal tiger enclosure here at Southwick’s even has a beautiful water fall and pool so these beautiful tigers can cool off in during the hot summer months. With large stands of Oak trees to provide shade over the entire zoo the park animals have a beautiful place to live.
Honored to be featured in the following Fine Art America and Pixels.com groups:
* Animal Photographs - 10/8/17
* Wildlife One A Day - 4/25/18
* Kingdom Animalia - 5/6/18
Fun Facts: The Bengal tiger, also known as the Royal Bengal Tiger or the Indian tiger, is the national animal of India. The coat of these felines is useful for camouflage but differs from individual to individual. In fact, no two Bengal tigers are marked the same, but make up a uniquely identifiable pattern such as fingerprints in humans. Due to a genetic mutation, there is a rare white variant of the Bengal tiger. It has a white coat with dark stripes and blue eyes, but it’s important to note that they are not albino tigers, just a genetic variety. Typically males are larger and heavier than females weighing between 400 to 550 pounds, with the weight of females averaging between 220-353 lbs. Canines in Bengal Tigers can grow to four inches and are larger than that of a lion. These powerful creatures also have retractable claws which allow them to climb. Their diet consists primarily of wild deer and wild cattle called gaur, also buffalo, young elephants, monkeys, birds, frogs, and porcupines.
Bengal tiger habitats usually are tropical rain forests, marshes, and tall grasses. The largest populations of Bengal tigers are in India, but there are some smaller groups in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. It may also be present in areas of China and Burma. Like most tigers, Panthera tigris is a solitary animal that rests in the shade during the day and hunts at dusk or dawn and enjoy staying around bodies of water to cool off. Lifespan of a tiger is 15 years is the wild, 20+ in captivity. It is said that the mighty roar of a Bengal can be heard up to two miles away. There are 36 species of cat in the world, and tigers are the largest. The farther north tigers live, the larger they are. Siberian tigers are the largest, and Sumatrans tigers are the smallest.
