This is a digital image of a soft pastel painting on suede mat board of a Shire Draft horse named Beau that I painted to raise money for Rockin'T Equine Rescue in Lisbon Falls, Maine. Beau, who was the ambassador for Rockin'T in 2001 was rescued along with his barn mate Silver, 30 miles from the Canadian border. Silver, the 18-year-old draft horse did not survive and died at a veterinary clinic 24 hours later. To nurse and rehabilitate Beau the 4 year old Shire stallion, Janet, the proprietor of Rockin'T along with her husband Andy and their daughter Tammy, pitched in through the long months ahead to cure Beau's severe mite infestation and infection on his legs. After Beau was gelded, it was a year before the farrier was able to trim his feet to a normal length and for Beau to regain a normal weight and shine to his coat. Sadly it took much longer to regain his trust, nearly 2 years would pass before Beau fully realized that Rockin'Ts motto of " every horse rescued would no longer face abuse, starvation and neglect", was really true. When I first saw Beau I fell in love with his noble stance even then with his thin frame, pathetic shaved legs and snarled long mane. In this painting you would not believe he is the same horse with his shiny coat, long free flowing mane and full gorgeous white and black feathers surrounding his legs. Beau learned to trust his care givers to brush his long mane and did not flinch when a hand reached out to stroke his face or nose and eagerly ran out of his stall into his turn out to greet everyone when they called his name. Sadly Beau passed away a few years ago so I decided to change the digital image of my original painting to a black & white reproduction to mark his passing. Beau may you continue to run in green pastures forever my friend. If you would like you can view the original full colored pastel painting on my website at www.animalsinpastels.com.
Please note 50% of the proceeds from the sale of all prints of Beau will be donated annually to continue to help all the other rescued animals who currently reside at Rockin 'T.

I love how he stands out from the soft background so that the focus is entirely on the horse.
