Description
“Hummingbird at Dawn” is an original wildlife photograph by Sandra Huston.
The ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is a species of hummingbird that generally spends the winter in Central America, Mexico, and Florida, and migrates to Eastern North America for the summer to breed. It is by far the most common hummingbird seen east of the Mississippi River in North America. They are 3 to 3.5 inches long and like to feed on red or orange flowers because of their high sugar content. Males are distinguished from females by their bright red throats (female throats are dull-white). Also, the females are larger than the males and have longer bills. This photograph was capture in my Lisbon Falls back yard of a male ruby-throated hummingbird resting in my lilac tree.
