As I am waiting for the arrival of our hummingbirds here in Lisbon Falls, Maine I decided to go through my archives and upload these Ruby-throated hummingbirds that I had photographed perched in our lilac tree in late spring several years ago. I remember in this photograph the sun was just rising and these poor little guys were trying to stay warm while filling up on the sugar water I always put out for them each year. Here in Maine we can have a 90 degree day and the next barely 60 degrees especially in the early spring. It just amazes me that these tiny little glittering jewels can travel from so far away and come back each year to breed and raise their young in our backyard. It is such a special treat to photograph and watch them each year.
For a more contemporary look I decided to add a few layers of matching borders and a transparent frame for the public to enjoy. This artwork would look especially beautiful reproduced as a canvas, acrylic or metal print for any nature lovers home or office.
Fun Facts: The ruby-throated hummingbird is a species of hummingbird that generally spends the winter in Central America, Mexico, and Florida, and migrates to Eastern North America for the summer to breed. While just one species is regular in the east (the Ruby-throated Hummingbird), the southwestern United States hosts several species. Wikipedia
