Description
" A Protective Display" is an original fine art wildlife photograph by Sandra Huston.
This loon photograph was captured while kayaking Woodbury Pond part of the chain of Tacoma Lakes in Litchfield, Maine on a hot sultry day in July. As you can see here this loon parent is performing a territorial display of lifting its body upright and flapping its wings vigorously. When humans get too close to loons with chicks you will often see this display, if you hear a defensive tremolo call along with this display than it is time to move away. After I spoke softly to this loon parent it calmed down immediately and continued to swim around looking for food while watching us as my friend and I captured a few more photographs. This was my first excursion kayaking this year after injuring my back last year and I am so blessed to be able to witness nature at its finest while these amazing animals raise their young on this beautiful lake.
