This image captures the beauty and grace of a common loon also known as the great Northern diver with its wings partially openedĀ and shaking the water from its wings. I never get tired of watching and photographing these amazing birds and look forward to camp each summer to listen to there haunting calls at night echoing across the lake.
Loons facts: Common loons are larger than the other loon species. Adults are 28 to 35 inches (70 to 90 centimeters) long with a wingspan of 60 inches (152 cm). Their weight ranges from 3.5 to 17.6 lbs. (1.6 to 8 kilograms). Common loons breed in forested lakes and large ponds found in Greenland, Iceland and northern North America. In the winter, they live along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America, Iceland and Europe. Wikipedia

The loon is a fascinating and ancient bird. I believe that its legs are set far back on its body so that it can only land on water.
