Description
"Loon Preening" is an original fine art wildlife photograph by Sandra Huston.
Loons spend time each day rubbing and preening their feathers with their beaks using an oil gland located beneath their tail feathers. This way they keep their feathers waterproofed & healthy. This adult loon was not concerned I was photographing the process and continued to hoot to me while I photographed him. Yes, I did hoot back to him. Everyone in the Litchfield, Maine area knows I am the loon lady and author of "Loons of Tacoma Lakes" a book celebrating the love of loons. You may think its funny, but most of the area loons know me by now and trust me enough so that I am accepted among them and get to interact and photograph them without disturbing them at all. It's a wonderful experience and I am very thankful and humbled with their trust.
