This is a pastel portrait of Tundra a male lion which I titled , Keeper of the Pride. In the wild a male lions job is to defend its territory and protect the pride while passing his genes onto his offspring. Male lions may grow up to 4 to 6 feet long and may weigh between 300 and 400 lbs. Only male lions sport a fringe of long hairs around their heads called manes. The female lions are the prides primary hunters and work as a team with other lionesses to bring down prey. I have been fascinated with lions ever since I viewed Dereck & Beverly Jouberts film titled: Eternal Enemies in 1992. As a birthday gift my husband brought me to DEW Haven in Mt. Vernon, Maine in 2011 to visit their big cat display and that is where I met and photographed Tundra, and many other big cats at the haven. It was a truly wonderful experience to witness the love and bond these big cats have with their owner Bob Miner. As we were walking around the sanctuary we heard Bob call out to Tundra and the lion would roar back to him. I will tell you the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end every time this lion roared. After spending some time near their cages photographing the big cats, Mr. Miner graciously invited me to come into the first enclosure to pat Bejoux, their black leopard. I was a little nervous but was very thrilled to be up close and to be able to feel his soft fur as he rubbed his head against the cage. I sported a grin from ear to ear while spending time with these big cats and every time I looked at my husband he would just shake his head and smile. It was a truly exceptional experience that I will never forget. I will be donating 50 % of the proceeds from this original pastel painting to the continued care of all of the animals housed at DEW Haven and the Big Cats Initiative through National Geographic. If you would like more information about DEW please visit www.dewhaven.com and the big cats initiative at http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/big-cats-initiative/get-involved/.
