While my husband and I were out enjoying a Sunday drive in June through Andover, Maine we came across a farm with the most adorable little Shetland Ponies grazing in the pasture. I could not pass up capturing these two little guys. At the beginning each one was vying for attention with the bay pony just posing perfectly for each shot. The grey pony got a little feisty when I did not have a treat for him and started to hassle his pasture mate. It was almost like he was jealous of all the attention the bay pony was getting. Sorry but I could not help it, the little bay was such a little ham and just kept posing shot after shot. This is #8 of a 12 part series

The Shetland pony is a short, stout, intelligent breed with a thick coat that originated in the Shetland Isles off the coast of Scotland. Small horses have been kept on the Shetland Isles since the Bronze Age. People who lived on the islands probably later crossed the native stock with ponies imported by Norse settlers. Shetland ponies also were probably influenced by the Celtic Pony, brought to the islands by settlers between 2000 and 1000 BCE. [Wikepedia] The harsh climate and scarce food developed the ponies into extremely hardy animals. Strong with a thick coat and robust body, the harsh conditions of the isles is responsible for its hardiness. According to some, the Shetland is the strongest of all breeds of horse or pony, reportedly able to pull its entire body weight, while most breeds can only manage half. They are extremely intelligent, gentle and loyal, which makes them ideal children’s pet.
