Loons spend time each day rubbing and preening their feathers with their beaks using an oil gland located beneath their tail feathers. This way they keep their feathers waterproofed & healthy. This image is # 2 of a 3 part series of a preening common loon photographed on Sand Pond while kayaking Tacoma Lakes in Litchfield, Maine late in September. It shows the viewer the stages captured while a loon preens and grooms its feathers. It always ends with the loon standing...
