The Peleides blue morpho, otherwise known as the common morpho or the emperor butterfly is an iridescent tropical butterfly found in Mexico, Central America, northern South America, Paraguay and Trinidad. The brilliant blue color in the butterfly's wings is caused by the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It uses this to frighten away predators, by flashing its wings rapidly. The wingspan of the blue morpho butterfly ranges from 3.0–7.9 in. The entire blue morpho butterfly life cycle, from egg to adult is only 115 days. Morpho peleides drinks the juices from rotting fruits for food. Its favorites in captivity are mango, kiwi. From Wikipedia
I photographed this beautiful Peleides blue morpho butterfly at "The Butterfly Place", an indoor butterfly garden located in Westford, Massachusetts at the end of September. It's amazing that this butterfly has such a bright iridescent blue color on top but an earthy brown patterned underside with several eyes like that of the Owl butterflies. If you love butterflies like I do than you will have to visit this special indoor garden when you are in the New England area. Although smaller than "Magic Wings" it is still a beautiful indoor garden featuring butterflies from North, Central, South America and Asia.
After uploading this original photograph I decided to add a few layers of matching green borders, a transparent frame that resulted in this contemporary styled wildlife art decor for the butterfly lover to enjoy.
