Jungle World, conceived and planned by William G. Conway, general director of the New York Zoological Society, is, in Dr. Conway's words, “the most ambitious indoor exhibition of its kind ever attempted; the object is to show animals in relationship to their environment here at the Bronx Zoo”. Jungle World, planning for which began in 1977, has been built at a cost of $9.5 million - $4.1 million of it a donation from Enid A. Haupt, a member of the New York Zoological Society's board of trustees. The new installation is the largest building at the zoo, about an acre overall, with a maximum height of 55 feet. Visitors walk through on a wooden path that meanders for a seventh of a mile, with only a waist-high railing between them and the environment. There are no bars, and most of the animals are separated from the people and one another only by ravines, streams or cliffs. There are four distinct habitats - a volcanic scrub forest, a mangrove swamp, a lowland evergreen rain forest with giant trees, which merges into a mountain rain forest - and museum-like galleries connecting and explaining the habitats. As you can attest here in my photograph that I captured during a recent trip in October of 2018 of a sleeping leopard resting on a large tree branch among these scenic plants. It’s as if you are seeing this beautiful big cat up close in the wilds of a tropical jungle. The Bronx Zoo opened in 1899 and remains one of the largest wildlife conservation parks in the United States, housing over 4,000 animals representing more than 650 species. This park is just not a zoo, but educates and helps preserve endangered species world wide. If you are ever in the New York City area, take the time and treat yourselves to an amazing experience.
Leopards eat small deer such as gazelle and impala. On occasion, they may also hunt monkeys, rodents and birds. They often bring their prey up into the branches of a tree to eat it and protect it from other predators and scavengers. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia including rain forests, grassland, mountains and desert terrains. The leopard is the most elusive and secretive of the large felids. They are extremely difficult to trace and locate in the wild as they are predominantly solitary animals that have large territories. While male territories are larger than females and tend to overlap, individuals usually only tolerate intrusion into ranges for mating. Leopards tend to have distinctive dark spots called rosettes, which create beautiful patterns against their otherwise light fur. Black leopards however have dark fur which makes it difficult to see the spots. They appear almost solid black and are often called black panthers.
